51㎡ Project: No.16 Wang Yuyang” is the final project of “51㎡.

Artist Wang Yuyang has shown his special understanding of ontology since the beginning. The series of works drawn materials from historical images, physical myths and dust, have given both macro and micro answers. These include what were created previously-our familiar works “Man-made Moon” and “Electricity”.

For this project, Wang Yuyang brings two new works “Picture and Character” and “Speak”. From the translation between language and image and the questioning of how media record themselves, the artist interprets how they become their respective monuments. “Picture and Character” is a large-size wall painting. Patches of different sizes, disordered pictures and abstract patterns resemble the two dimensional code that is commonly used in current commodity transaction, traffic management and identification. Once we decode these randomly-created codes, this set of chaotic pictures start to have a concrete meaning. Character is image itself. When an image acts as a conveyancer of another image, it then completes its own writing. However, this depends on how we treat them. The other sound installation “Speak” shows the artists’ universal anxiety towards media as materials. Wang Yuyang uses tape to record a process showing how this medium produces, i.e. how object exercises the rights of subject and objectivizes itself again. The media that used to be tools tell the history of how they grow up. We turn from using them to listening to them. Same as the graphic poem in “Picture and Character”, these abstract signals immediately restore to a kind of descriptive truth.
