TIME LAPSE

2007.06.23 - 2007.07.07

The traditional visual culture represented by the mediums of painting and sculpture has had the function to record and document since they came about. They document what people see, think and reflect upon. They use various visible images which present the particular details and content of what has been seen and heard, as well as stories and thoughts through a kind of narrative. These visible images come from the objective world, which is considered as the source of main creative elements, and at the same time is the main subject of description.
Can time, the abstract and invisible matter become the main body of visual representation? I treat the artist Yin Zhaoyang’s work as an example of something that deals with time. Through the analysis of his characterization of time in his past works, and his description of the purely abstract concept of time in his recent works, we can gain a fresh understanding of the expressive ability of these traditional visual means on invisible subjects.
