This book is based on the exhibition of the same title, “Norman Bethune：Coevolution of Hero and Photography”. Beginning with a review of Dr. Bethune’s work and life in the War of Resistance in China, it explores how his image was created and developed, as well as how CPC-themed photography was started, promoted and organized. Through an in-depth analysis of his image, the most classic example of CPC’s ideological elaboration, this book aims to highlight and discuss a number of issues related to the system in CPC-themed photography. It also unveils for the first time an invaluable series of photographic archives of Dr. Bethune and some important photographs in the liberated area.
