Exhibition Introduction

“Good Painting” is a special experiment of the Light Pavilion project. It is inspired by the accidentals which are not included in the main creations of the artists. Some of them are designing drafts, some are trials of colours or compositions on paper, some are handbooks with rich personal meanings, some are short sketches digressing from the main theme, and some are even works of play without any purpose or limitation…In today’s art world glutted with countless exhibitions, artist websites and portfolios, these works are almost invisible. There are various reasons for their being ‘invisible’ – not systematic enough, not classical enough, not experimental enough, not conceptual enough, and even not big enough. But is that really so? Most of the cases, these works have been automatically blocked from the exhibition mechanism driven by presentation and circulation since they were born. Although there are inequalities among different artworks from their origins, it is not the excuse for some of the works not being seen and appreciated by the audience. The light of art can always illuminate the paintings that are shelved or, for the time being ignored.

Now we invite you to join us, to turn your eyes to the secrets that have been sealed, isolated and buried. However, even us may feel unsure about how to name or to introduce these works to you. They are classified into the realm of paintings, but it is still extremely difficult to find a contemporary way to depict, determine, display them and to bring them into the history of art. All we could say is that they are “good paintings” – the same expression when you are walking around artists’ studios and come across some amazing creations by the door or on your way upstairs. It is very regretful that for now we could only use a rather casual phrase which is not legitimized by the history of art to define these works. However, we still have the chance to experience and to discover our boundaries and blindness so far, to better encounter with a mysterious yet intimate existence at the scene filled with unconsciously triggered daily moments.

Light Pavilion Project

As a site for individual project, “Light Pavilion” is initiated in 2012, based on the second floor of Taikang Space. It aims at providing a flexible platform for artists to realize their ambitions. After an interval of two years, “Light Pavilion” is restarted in 2016, embracing a vision always open to uncertainty, complicity and detournement. It’s not only a site for sensational immersion and experiential evocation but also a forum dedicated to diversity and otherness. In 2017, Light Pavilion will bring the young curators and their practice into its focus, and open to  a more divisive, expanded field of contemporary art scene.
