Taikang Space’s project 51m2 was elected one of the “Top Ten Exhibitions of 2010” by the Chinese Website of ARTINFO

“Taikang Space’s project 51m2 has always been one of ARTINFO’s focuses of attention. It is not as simple as a series of young artists’ solo exhibitions; it is more of an exploration that looks for more possibilities in a limited system. Wang Sishun, Hu Xiangqian and Li Mu have all extended their exhibitions to the outside of the 51m2 space-how to walk out and then come back to question a fixed system; how to use continuity to beat the boundary between the art creation/production and the viewing…In our eyes, these are all precious explorations that have been carried out by 51m2 for more than one year. There might be more systematic thoughts accumulated when the conclusive group exhibition opens next spring.”

Taikang Space’s “51m2: No.7 Hu Xiangqian” was selected “Their Favorite Exhibition” by Art Forum

Taikang Space’s “51m2: No.7 Hu Xiangqian” was selected “Their Favorite Exhibition” by Art Forum

"During the past several years, Hu Xiangqian has been collecting conceptual art-or in other words, collecting artworks “conceptually”. This exhibition recorded his Xiangqian Art Museum (2010). In fifteen minutes, the artist depicted to the audience the works he “collected”. During the process, he swayed his body from time to time. This performance showed the characteristics of Hu’s creation that have existed for many years. He always pushed himself to an impossible situation. For example, in Flying Blue Flags (2005), the 21-year-old artist went to campaign for village head in his hometown; in The Sun (2008), his skin color became totally dark after too much exposure in the sun; in Extra Knowledge (2010), he tried survival supremacy and stayed in the wilds for fifteen days. "

Taikang Space’s 51m2 project was elected “Best of 2010” in the artist selection part of Art Forum

Taikang Space’s 51m2 project was elected “Best of 2010” in the artist selection part of Art Forum

The project 51m2 was customized for young artists by Taikang Space. It kept on promoting the young artists of a new generation and brought 13 solo exhibitions with different style in the year of 2010, which attracted broad attention in the art circle. This project was elected “Best of 2010” in the December Issue of Art Forum.

"51m2 is the cogitation and one of the tentative breakthroughs of the current status. What I like the most is that it tried its best to exclude utilitarianism and was not reduced to a model “Records of Myriad Things” that was compiled to establish some sort of power of speech. These exhibitions were neither masterpieces nor exercises, but something in between. They presented a kind of dynamic, which offered opportunities for young artists to pursue their own clues and promote their careers. “

With the exhibition In between in Taikang Space in 2010, Han Lei was shortlisted as “Photography Artist of the Year 2010” by “Color Image Link”

With the exhibition In between in Taikang Space in 2010, Han Lei was shortlisted as “Photography Artist of the Year 2010” by “Color Image Link”

Han Lei has been a representative Chinese photography artist since 1980s. His works are described as “images entangled with reality and fiction”. But he said, “your psychological energy reflects in this corner and that’s why you see these things”.

The curating and the implementing of the exhibition In between in Taikang Space were different from the usual way of displaying artworks. The exhibition selected some trial slips, samples, damaged photos and the same film developed in different periods of time that Han Lei gathered in his darkroom from 1980s to 1990s. Different photographic papers and conditions presented delicate disparities. The design of the exhibition site tried to be close enough to the train of thought of the artist: using these texts and materials as clues to be a comparison to the final and finished works. At the same time, it showcased the positives of color photos and the finished color photos as well. The audience could see the artist’s way of creation in different periods of time and the delicate differences he had when facing reality, both of which constitute the entire look of his works.

Taikang Space took the project 51m2 to the “Discovery” unit of SHContemporary

Taikang Space took the project 51m2 to the “Discovery” unit of SHContemporary

At SHContemporary 2010, apart from the display in the non-profit exhibition area, Taikang Space also participated in a special unit-“Discovery”, showcasing works by five young artists from the project 51m2, which attracted much attention.

The creation of young artists might represent the direction of art in the future. We search for representative young artists to be our future tracking target. These young artists are forming their own attitude and position of art. Through this project, people can understand their observation of social reality and their thinking about life, death, nature and the history of mankind. Each time 51m2 invited a young artist to show a work or several works focusing on the same theme in a limited space-51m2. Different from other “big” exhibitions, with limited space and funds, this project emphasized more on the issue of creation returning to art itself.
